Being the development grounds for the department all sworn personnel start off assigned to Uniform Patrol and as openings occur in other areas they are generally filled from this Division.
Uniform Patrol officers are responsible for patrolling the city 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There are three platoons that work the three basic shifts and each is broken down into three groups. There is also a group of officers that work Wednesday through Saturday evenings specifically. The city is divided into two sides, Northside and Southside, and each is divided into zones that the officers are assigned to with relative consistency that affords officers the chance to learn the people and problems in their zones.
The

trained in the mechanics and techniques of police work, as well as in the policies, procedures and philosophy
of the Portsmouth Police Department.
